Bathroom Renovation Cost Guide

A bathroom budget depends on the work behind the tile as much as the fixtures you can see. Compare equivalent scopes before comparing totals.

The Short Answer

How Much Does a Bathroom Renovation Cost?

For early planning, our broad full-bathroom allowance is $15,000–$35,000+ CAD. A cosmetic refresh is a different scope. This is not a guaranteed average or quote; confirm tax, demolition, waterproofing, fixtures and trade work in a written estimate.

Refresh or Full Bathroom Remodel?

Replacing a vanity and repainting while keeping the existing tub and sound surfaces differs from rebuilding the shower, tile, floor and ventilation. Decide what stays before choosing a budget.

What Changes a Bathroom Renovation Budget?

Waterproofing and Substrate

A tiled shower is an assembly: suitable substrate, compatible waterproofing, drainage details and finish tile. A tile-only price does not describe the complete installed system. Ask which products and preparation are included.

Plumbing and Electrical Work

Keeping fixtures in place may limit service changes, but it does not prove that existing systems are suitable. Relocated drains, added circuits and ventilation routes need assessment by the relevant trades.

Glass, Fixtures and Tile Coverage

Full-height tile, custom glass, niches and additional fixtures change quantities and installation work. Select actual models before comparing allowances; a supply-only vanity price is not an installed price.

Small Bathroom Measurement Example

An 8-by-5-foot room has 40 square feet of floor area. At an 8-foot ceiling height, its gross wall area is 208 square feet before subtracting openings. Those are different quantities: do not use floor area to price every wall finish.

Record shower dimensions separately, mark which walls receive tile and count fixtures. Photos of access, the existing vanity, tub or shower and ventilation help define an initial scope. The calculator uses simplified quantities; verify a site-specific takeoff before ordering.

What Should a Bathroom Quote Include?

  • Demolition, disposal and protection of the route through the home
  • Substrate preparation, waterproofing and tile installation scope
  • Fixture models, faucets, glass, accessories and delivery
  • Plumbing, electrical and ventilation work, with responsibility for approvals
  • Painting, trim, final cleanup, exclusions and a change-order process

Keep concealed damage separate from agreed work until assessed. For local installation services, explore bathroom renovation contractors in Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville.

Common Planning Questions

Does a small bathroom always cost less?

Not proportionally. A small room still needs fixtures, waterproofing, trade visits and site protection. Compare the actual scope rather than multiplying a larger project’s cost by floor area.

Is a tub-to-shower conversion just a fixture replacement?

Not necessarily. Drain position, the shower base or tiled assembly, waterproofing, glass, ventilation and existing conditions all affect the work. An on-site assessment establishes what can be reused.

Can I get an exact price from the calculator?

No. It provides itemized planning allowances from selected work and simplified quantities. A site review, confirmed selections and written scope are needed for a construction quote.
